The recent findings suggest that previous estimates of the number of hammerhead sharks was likely inflated since they had included the newfound species.? The reason for the late identification is explained by the roughly 20 fewer vertebrae the new species have and differences in their DNA.?

"It's a classic case of long-standing species misidentification that not only casts further uncertainty on the status of the real scalloped hammerhead, but also raises concerns about the population status of this new species," said Mahmood Shivji, professor at Nova Southeastern University, LiveScience reports.

The new species was originally detected in 2005 off the eastern coast of the United States, when Shivji?s research team was examining the DNA of sharks initially perceived to be hammerheads due to their physical characteristics.?

Genetic assessment shows that approximately 7 percent of the sharks detected in US waters originally thought to be scalloped hammerheads belong to the newly discovered species, as scientists from Nova Southern University and the University of South Carolina had confirmed.

Chronic overfishing and finning had resulted into the dramatic reduction of shark populations around the globe and growing concerns about the impact their eventual extinction might have to the ocean ecosystem.

"It's very important to officially recognize, name and learn more about this new hammerhead species and the condition of its populations through systematic surveys," Shivji said, according to the United Press International. "Without management intervention to curtail its inadvertent killing, we run the risk that overfishing could eradicate an entire shark species before its existence is even properly acknowledged."

Although finning is banned in the US, it is estimated that 73 million sharks are killed annually to support a booming international trade.? Shark finning is the process in which fishermen cut of their fins and sell them to mainly Asian markets where it constitutes the main ingredient in a traditional soup delicacy. It is a lucrative trade since these species are sold for about $120 for every 2.2 lbs.

Hammerheads are usually found in tropical and temperate waters along coastlines and continental shelves stretching from the Caribbean to Australia.

Their length ranges from roughly 13 to 20 feet long and weigh from 500 to 1000 pounds, according to National Geographic.?

Obama OKs tough new sanctions against Iran

WASHINGTON -- The White House said Friday that the United States would implement tough new sanctions aimed at squeezing Iran's oil exports after President Barack Obama determined there is enough crude on world markets to take the step without harming U.S. allies.

Obama's move allows the U.S. to go forward with sanctions on foreign banks that continue to purchase oil from Iran. The sanctions aim to further isolate Iran's central bank, which processes nearly all of the Islamic Republic's oil purchases, from the global economy.

U.S. officials hope ratcheting up economic pressure will both push Iran to abandon its disputed nuclear program and convince Israel to give sanctions time to take hold before pursuing a military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The U.S. and allies believe that Iran is pursuing a nuclear bomb; Iran denies that.

Under a sweeping defense bill Obama signed at the end of December, he had until Friday to determine if there was enough oil supply on the world market to allow countries to cut their oil purchases from Iran.The decision was announced in a statement Friday.

The president said he based his determination on global economic conditions, the level of spare oil capacity and increased production by some countries, among other factors. He said he would keep monitoring the global market closely to ensure it can handle a reduction of oil purchases from Iran.

The law requires the president to determine every six months whether petroleum prices are low enough and production ample enough to apply the sanctions, The New York Times said. It also allows the president to waive sanctions if they threaten national security or if gas prices increase.

The national average price of gasoline rose about half a cent to $3.93 per gallon on Friday, only about a nickel less than last year's high of $3.98 a gallon, reached in May. Analysts think pump prices will top $4 a gallon nationally within the next couple of weeks, perhaps sooner. Then they could start to fall.

Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service has said the average pump price could climb as high as $4.25 per gallon next month, which would top the all-time record of $4.11 per gallon set in 2008. He expects the national average to hit about $4.05 per gallon by mid-April. Whether it goes any higher, or retreats, after that is unclear, he said.

U.S. officials have sought assurances that pushing countries to stop buying from Iran would not cause a further spike in prices.

That's particularly important for Obama in an election year that has seen an increasing focus on gas prices.

The congressionally mandated sanctions target foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank ? barring them from operating in the U.S. to buy or sell Iranian oil. The penalties are to take effect at the end of June, around the same time Europe's embargo on Iranian oil kicks in.

Countries can still avoid the sanctions if they take steps to significantly reduce their imports before then.

Many of the countries that buy oil from Iran are U.S. allies, including several European Union nations, Japan, South Korea and India. In order to provide flexibility to countries friendly to the U.S., the sanctions bill allows the U.S. to grant waivers to nations that significantly reduce their purchases of Iranian oil.

Even before Friday's decision, the State Department announced that it would grant waivers to 10 European Union countries and Japan because of steps they have already taken to cut back on Iranian oil. An E.U. oil embargo, approved in January, is set to take effect in July.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who co-authored the sanctions legislation with Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, said he welcomed Obama's support in targeting Iran's Central Bank. Menendez's office says he was also notified of the decision earlier Friday

"Today, we put on notice all nations that continue to import petroleum or petroleum products from Iran that they have three months to significantly reduce those purchases or risk the imposition of severe sanctions on their financial institutions," Menendez said in a statement.

Bees 'self-medicate' when infected with some pathogens

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Research from North Carolina State University shows that honey bees "self-medicate" when their colony is infected with a harmful fungus, bringing in increased amounts of antifungal plant resins to ward off the pathogen.

"The colony is willing to expend the energy and effort of its worker bees to collect these resins," says Dr. Michael Simone-Finstrom, a postdoctoral research scholar in NC State's Department of Entomology and lead author of a paper describing the research. "So, clearly this behavior has evolved because the benefit to the colony exceeds the cost."

Wild honey bees normally line their hives with propolis, a mixture of plant resins and wax that has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Domesticated honey bees also use propolis, to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers found that, when faced with a fungal threat, bees bring in significantly more propolis -- 45 percent more, on average. The bees also physically removed infected larvae that had been parasitized by the fungus and were being used to create fungal spores.

Researchers know propolis is an effective antifungal agent because they lined some hives with a propolis extract and found that the extract significantly reduced the rate of infection.

And apparently bees can sometimes distinguish harmful fungi from harmless ones, since colonies did not bring in increased amounts of propolis when infected with harmless fungal species. Instead, the colonies relied on physically removing the spores.

However, the self-medicating behavior does have limits. Honey bee colonies infected with pathogenic bacteria did not bring in significantly more propolis -- despite the fact that the propolis also has antibacterial properties. "There was a slight increase, but it was not statistically significant," Simone-Finstrom says. "That is something we plan to follow up on."

There may be a lesson here for domestic beekeepers. "Historically, U.S. beekeepers preferred colonies that used less of this resin, because it is sticky and can be difficult to work with," Simone-Finstrom says. "Now we know that this is a characteristic worth promoting, because it seems to offer the bees some natural defense."

Pros: Great for re-posting content to Facebook friends using ?Share? button.
Cons: ?Facebook feed becomes consumed with impersonal content. I enjoy using Facebook for personal connections and content. I can?t sort out my likes or control how they show up in my feed.

Tools for Sharing Content?

Now that I know what content I have to work with, I need to work out how I will push such content in the most strategic way possible. Of great importance here is the way the content is displayed, shared and what audiences it reaches.

Facebook ? Good for sharing a wide range of content with a specific audience (of friends) in mind.

Twitter ? I intend to push all content sharing platforms are pushed through Twitter (Facebook, Tumblr, Delicious, Pinterest) . My twitter account will show off all my social media activity in one place ? my aims are for this to become my biggest and most varied audience.

Google+ - Using the Google + button, I intend to share all Social Media related content. Most of the users I have on Google + are social media/tech oriented.

Tumblr ? For sharing pics, videos, quotes related to music, film, design, humour, inspiration, etc.

Delicious ? For sharing and compiling interesting resources to refer to later or share with others.

Pinterest ? For sharing Fashion, Decor, Places, Recipes.

And now suddenly, after putting some thought into my aggregation and sharing processes, I?ve developed a strategic social media sharing plan! ?I will have to put it to the test and see where it takes me. I can?t wait!

One would hope they would be ethical to all sides- but the agency needs to be understood. Ask him/her if KS law is the same- if so- you may want to entertain finding a good Realtor to both list your current property, as well as represent you as buyer for the home you would like to purchase. I have done it numerous times, and I never think of my commission when I negotiate. I doubt any REALTOR I know would do that.

As for selling your home, it should not give you any advantage other than the agent will have first hand knowledge of our home and then be able to report back to the seller better while waiting on your home to sell.

I would perhaps use your Facebook page to ask your friends who they used as a REALTOR, and go with a recommendation. You should have your own representation, especially if you have any doubt of motivation of the listing agent.

Real estate agents do not get compensated until about a week after closing typically, I also don?t think that most people realize we do not get reimbursed for gas, wear and tear on our ars, or anyrhing else we do. Most real estate agents are 1099 Independent Contractors here in the USA, which means they also pay double social securitty.

Mass transit use up with gas prices, improving economy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans took 10.4 billion trips on public transportation in 2011, the second-highest total since 1957, as gasoline prices rose and the economy improved, an industry group said on Monday.

Only ridership in 2008, when gasoline rose to more than $4 a gallon, beat 2011's total, the American Public Transportation Association said in a statement.

Ridership was up last year 2.3 percent from 2010, with the increase spread across large, medium and small communities.

"Two top reasons for the increased ridership are higher gas prices and in certain areas, a recovering economy with more people returning to work," Michael Melaniphy, the association's president and chief executive, said in the statement.

The fastest pace of growth was in rural communities with populations under 100,000, with an increase of 5.4 percent.

Light rail ridership increased 4.9 percent in 2011, with increases of 37.2 percent for Seattle and 31.2 percent in Dallas.

Ridership for subways and elevated trains was up 3.3 percent and commuter rail ridership rose 2.5 percent. Large bus systems reported an increase of 0.4 percent nationally.

The report comes as the association is holding its legislative conference in Washington to meet with lawmakers and regulators.

Federal funding is set to expire at the end of March and the Senate is scheduled to vote on a two-year, $109 billion authorization bill on Tuesday.

A House transportation bill calling for $260 billion in spending over five years failed to gain support. House Speaker John Boehner said last week he was willing to take up the Senate measure instead.
