Sprint Direct Connect brandishes passport, brings push-to-talk to distant shores

Although Sprint is winding down iDEN services here in the US, it hasn't turned its back on the technology completely. The nation's third largest wireless carrier has announced a new push-to-talk service offering, dubbed International Direct Connect. The $10 monthly add-on will allow Direct Connect push-to-talk users in the US -- utilizing its CDMA network -- to communicate with iDEN PTT users in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru free of charge. Although not explicitly stated, the aforementioned nations are referred to as "initial" markets, implying that more countries will be added to this list at some point in the future. All the details about the business-focused proposition, along with the press sheet, can be found after the break.

A Run Down Of The Mobile Startups At MLove, Monterey

Screen Shot 2012-04-27 at 15.16.57MLOVE is a European mobile conference with a difference. If a mobile conference was crossed with TED and a music festival, that's vaguely like MLove. Its big annual event is in an old East German castle 200 miles outside of Berlin. Yes, it's as exotic as it sounds. But this week it took the plunge and brought its special atmosphere to Monterey. Amid the excellent speeches about the future of mobile, and the future generally, organiser Harald Neidhardt throws together a diverse range of speakers, from Grammy Award winning Musician Chamillionaire to "CameraGirl", who runs tech at Burning Man. As one delegate, Dr. Robert Daubner of billiger, put it to me, "mobile is poised to disrupt the world." Never were truer words spoken... Amid the high concept presentations from the likes of the Singularity University and others were a number of startup pitches from U.S.-based startups. Here's a run-down on those:

Demi Lovato Speaks on Illicit Drug Use: I Could Have Died

A couple weeks ago on Twitter, Demi Lovato bared her true face.

Now, in the pages of British magazine Fabulous, the singer is baring her soul.

Demi Lovato in Fabulous

In one of her more honest interviews to date, the 19-year old goes into detail about her pre-rehab drug use, telling the publication:

"I was depressed. I would come offstage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to re-create that feeling, to stay 'up.'"

And you might be shocked to learn who fueled Demi's habit.

"Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs," she said. "They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass."

Lovato, of course, entered a treatment facility in November 2010 and has talked since about her emotional and physical issues, citing an eating disorder and bi-polarity. But this is the first time she's really discussed any kind of substance abuse.

"Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says 'no'. That's why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me."

Instead, thank God, Demi has bounced back and her career is going strong. She performed last month on American Idol.

Boyz II Men: The 'Battle Of The Boy Bands' Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now!
By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena

Boyz II Men
Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images

Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like 'NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round.

One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men, who told MTV News they were among the "progenitors" of the entire boy-band genre. "We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about," Nathan Morris told us.

Highest Chart Achievement
In the mid-'90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That's not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it's also the biggest single ever: "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey.

Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt.

Standout Video
The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You" and "Water Runs Dry," but for its cameos alone, "On Bended Knee" rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Renée Jones and, most importantly for nostalgia addicts, Kim Fields (Tootie from "The Facts of Life" and later "Living Single") and Lark Voorhies (that's Lisa Turtle from "Saved by the Bell" to you).

Defining Tune
Regardless of your age, chances are you know every word to many of Boyz II Men's greatest hits, so it's hard to pick just one defining tune. But there really is something special about 1994's "I'll Make Love to You." Discounting their Carey collab "One Sweet Day," the song is the band's biggest standalone hit (14 weeks at #1). The Babyface-written song defines the phrase "power ballad" and won the group a 1995 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Debut Album
These guys got straight to the hitmaking with their 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony. Executive produced by Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe, the album introduced the Boyz in grand fashion with the funky R&B jam "Motownphilly" and brought them another hit with "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."

Biggest Competition
That would most definitely be Jodeci, who in the '90s went head to head with the Boyz on the charts with their similar (if not as internationally successful and chart-topping) blending of R&B and soul.

So, how does the band feel about the competition? Well, they seem to have a lot of respect for their former competitors. Regarding Jodeci, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman told MTV News, "It was a mutual respect that we had for those guys and them for us."

After revealing that the two bands once had a bit of a beef, Stockman elaborated that it was really just "friendly competition." "I'm sure they had the same mentality as far as being onstage and trying to outdo us just like we were trying to outdo them," he shared. "They were great artists, and we didn't want to have people talking about [how] they did better than us, just like they probably felt the same way."

Voting in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

MrsMamaHen.com: Military Monday - a Special Post (with Linky Party)

I have a special post to share with you today for Military Monday. This is Olivia, who is an Army Wife stationed in Hawaii. She is also a talented artist. Half of all the proceeds from this song are being donated to the Fisher House Foundation. If you are not familiar with Fisher House, it is an organization that helps provide a "home away from home" for families of ill or injured soldiers, so they can be with them. It is a very worthy cause, and close to my heart.

""There You Go Again" is a song I wrote for military wives who (like me) have endured countless deployments and separations. No actors were used in this video - only active duty Army soldiers & their families preparing for deployments at the time of filming."

And while you are here - check out my take on "Army Wives" - the book that inspired the TV show.

When A Paint Sprayer Is The Better Choice | Online Business Expert ...

?

Some tools, like a hammer and screwdriver, are a necessity in every household. Others are designed to save you time, but they aren?t truly a necessity. A paint sprayer falls into this category. You could use a roller and paint brush, but the sprayer will save you time and spare your arm. If you aren?t sure how often you would use a sprayer, here are just a few of the projects where you will wish you had one.

Painting the Fence

Wood fences are refined, but they require regular maintenance. Painting a wood fence by hand is tedious, and the chore can take days to complete. Once you are finished, you might feel like your arm is going to fall off. A sprayer, however, turns this vacation chore into an easy Saturday project. Trim the grass extremely short on both sides of the fence and lay some newspapers under it to catch the overspray. With that minor preparation, you are ready to paint the fence in the morning and then enjoy the rest of your day.

Short Work of Porch Railings

Faded and peeling porch rails can make your entire home look tired and in disrepair. Putting a fresh coat of paint on all those spindles can take the better part of your weekend. You could try to convince some friends to help, or you could pull out the sprayer and make this a fast project. Place newspapers under the railing to catch the overspray. Tape it to the porch around posts. Enlist the help of a friend to hold up a large piece of cardboard or a drop cloth while you spray the spindles. This will catch the overspray and prevent it from going all over your landscaping or porch.

Interior Bedrooms

Even if your home has vinyl siding or brick, you can still use the sprayer to cover large interior rooms. Ideal for textured surfaces, a sprayer will also put a beautiful coating of paint on smooth walls. Take the time to shield trim, floor and fixtures with painter?s tape and newspapers. Rather than spending an entire day painting a room, you can make it a morning project and then go enjoy the evening.

Ceilings

Notoriously hard to paint, large ceilings can leave your shoulders aching and leave you wondering why you tackled the project. However, you can purchase special attachments for paint sprayers that will make short work of this chore. Affordable and available at your local home improvement store, these attachments will let you paint a ceiling in record time.

Sprayer or Brush

There will be times when a roller and brush is the better choice. Before pulling out your sprayer for a job, you should take into account how long it will take you to tape off and prepare the area if you choose the sprayer. Sprayers also take longer to clean, so be sure to consider that time. However, you will find that most large jobs are better suited to the sprayer. The sprayer will make the job faster, the coverage will be more complete and it will be easier on your arms.

There are many benefits to adding a paint sprayer to your collection of painting tools. While you won?t use it on every job, you will be glad to have it when those larger chores come up. Invest in a high quality sprayer, and be sure to clean it thoroughly after every use so it will last for years to come.

Double Take: Getting To The Bottom Of 'Hot Problems'

The teen twosome talks to MTV News about their viral video and how it all happened... sort of.
By Jocelyn Vena

Double Take in their "Hot Problems" music video
Photo: Old Bailey Productions

Three days and more than 1 million streams later, Double Take are certifiable Internet sensations. The teen twosome's track, the hotly debated "Hot Problems," is a song about all the troubles attractive people face, if you couldn't guess from the title. The video features little more than the high school seniors hanging out in a limo mugging for the camera.

The two high schoolers have risen to the ranks of Rebecca Black heights, but very little is actually known about them. And, when MTV News chatted with them on Thursday afternoon, it seemed they still wanted to keep the details about who they are and who is helping them become so popular as vague as possible.

"We're working with a production company, but it's more of a behind-the-scenes thing," Lauren explained. "We don't like to talk about it that much."

The girls wouldn't give their last names, and only added this information about how "Hot Problems" ended up an Internet hot commodity: "We are getting some help, but in the end we have friends helping us out, a bunch of different people. We don't want to drag them into this," she added, not confirming what the role of Old Bailey Productions has. "It's been crazy for us too to get so much attention and we don't want this to affect their lives too much."

On their video's official YouTube page it notes that OBP "produced the video as a favor," and the twosome wasn't willing to go into more details. They were more forthcoming about what prompted them to write the track, which has been debated, a lot, leaving many people wondering if the pair is even serious or if it's just a big Internet joke, since most opinions were unfavorable.

"It was all just for fun and to just have something we could share with our friends," Drew said. "Well, we enjoy writing funny lyrics and songs and we decided that we really liked this one. So we decided to make it into a song and video, eventually. We really had no intentions when we put this up to begin with, so seeing it take so rapidly, we haven't really had a chance to decide what we want to do. I think that hopefully there could be a future with it."

The overnight rise to online fame has been surprising to the pair. Drew noted, "It was shocking. It hasn't really sunken in for any of us. The first day it was a joke around the school and then the next day we had friends of friends contacting us."

"And then the third day is when it went viral," Lauren added, "I would say." Well, now that the world is looking at them, Lauren admitted, "I don't think we're going to be the next Adele, but we do really like writing songs and coming up with lyrics. Who knows? Maybe we'll get into that."

Sony to launch PlayMemories Online: 5GB cloud photo-sharing service coming next week

Sony's PlayMemories photo-editing suite has floated around the PlayStation Store for about a month but it will apparently soon be joined by a new photo-sharing service. PCWorld reports that Sony will launch the cloud-based PlayMemories Online with 5GB of free storage in Japan, US, UK, Canada, Germany and France on May 25. Apparently, you'll be able to access those digitized memories through Sony's proprietary software on both PC and Macs, while your photos can also be streamed to Bravia TVs and digital photo frames. The company's WiFi-capable cameras will also get to hook up with the online storage system, while its Android tablets and phones will get their very own app to upload on their own. In an effort to differentiate the service from existing ones like Dropbox, PlayMemories Online will even sync those precious photos with your PSP and PS Vita. Sony will thus ensure you'll never be without at least four screens to show off those shots of your precocious daughter, pug or beachside view. In case you forgot, we've embedded a video from a few months back that should give a better idea of how the system should work -- in a house filled entirely with Sony merchandise.

Microsoft reveals the fourth version of Windows 8: Enterprise

Windows 8 logo

We're sure some of you aren't as interested in the Windows 8 versions destined for workplace drudgery as you are the home editions, but admit it, the IT guy inside of you is a little curious. As detailed in an official blog post, the new unique feature in Windows 8 Enterprise is Windows To Go, which we think of as Windows on a stick. Basically it allows you to run your corporate image on a home PC or other personal devices -- the opposite of that USB disk you carry to work with portable versions of your favorite unsanctioned apps. Also new is the ability to automatically sideload internal Metro apps as well as enhancements to the virtual desktop client. Of course Windows 7 Enterprise features like DirectAccess, BranchCache and AppLocker are still there, but some features like BitLocker are now available in the Pro version of Windows 8 too. If you were thinking you might like these at home, don't forget that Enterprise is only sold with Software Assurance (Microsoft's perpetual upgrade program), but that does bring extra abilities too, like a free Virtual Desktop Access license -- you didn't think you got that for free did you -- and the optional Companion Device license that extends your VDI and Windows To Go rights to four more personal devices. Now, if it just included the ability to boot directly to the desktop, then most corporation's biggest concern with Windows 8 would be appeased.

Spotify: the iPad app is 'in the works'

Image

It's never a great sign when the first thing you see upon entering a press conference is a giant Coca-Cola logo. iPad and web platform rumors aside, today's Spotify "special announcement" event was all about the soft drink side of things, marking a partnership between the music streaming service and Coke, which involves, at present, some Spotify / Coke apps. The first question from the audience, however, revolved around the rumored tablet version of the service. Spotify founder Daniel Ek acknowledged that it is indeed "in the works," otherwise evading the question, insisting that the event was all about the Coke partnership, to the relief of the two beverage reps who joined him on stage.
