A whisker-inspired approach to tactile sensing
ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Inspired by the twitching whiskers of common rats and Etruscan shrews, EU-funded researchers have developed rodent-like robots and an innovative tactile sensor system that could be used to help find people in burning buildings, make vacuum cleaners more efficient and eventually improve keyhole surgery.
Sensor systems that replicate the sense of touch have been the focus of increasing research in recent years, largely for robotics applications. But the focus has normally been on developing sensors that in some way or another replicate the way humans touch and sense the world: with our skin and particularly our fingertips.
'The main reason people explored fingertip-like sensors is because we have fingertips, but any kind of tactile sensor has to interact with objects and surfaces -- and fingertips have a big problem with wear and tear,' explains Tony Prescott, a professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.
Nature, however, has devised a much more robust, and often much more sensitive, kind of tactile sensing device: whiskers.
'If you look at the natural world, almost all mammals except humans have whiskers -- it's actually us that have lost them. Whiskers are a natural way to sense things with touch,' Prof. Prescott says.
And, it turns out, just like their biological counterparts, artificial whiskers offer some big advantages over other approaches to tactile sensing as Prof. Prescott and a team of researchers from seven countries have proved in the Biotact (1) project. Supported by EUR 5.4 million in research funding from the European Commission, the researchers studied rats and mice, tiny Etruscan shrews and other mammals and attempted to replicate the way they use their whiskers, or 'vibrissae', to sense their environment, detect objects and follow prey.
Their work has led to the development of an active vibrissal tactile sensor array and a series of rat-like robots that can move around by touch alone. The technology could potentially be used commercially for applications as diverse as search and rescue, consumer appliances, product testing or medicine.
'To begin with we had to understand how mammals use their whiskers. Around one third of the project was therefore dedicated to behavioural neuroscience, including filming rats and shrews using high-speed cameras to see how they use their whiskers whilst monitoring patterns of neural activity,' Prof. Prescott, the Biotact project coordinator, explains.
The team then worked out how to replicate natural vibrissal sensing in an artificial system. Their system works by measuring the vibration at the base of the shaft of a whisker caused by it coming into contact with an object or surface. Miniature motors enable individual whiskers or arrays of hundreds of whiskers to be moved and brushed against objects in much the same way that rodents move their whiskers back-and-forth at high speed. Software and powerful processing algorithms analyse the feedback from the whiskers to determine, for example, whether a surface is rough or smooth, if there is a corner or wall, how far away an object is or even if an object is moving.
For rodents, most of which have poor eyesight, active control of the whiskers allows the animal to accurately position the tip of the whiskers as well as control how the whisker moves in order to gain as much information as possible about an object or surface. In this way, they can rely on touch alone to explore and even hunt for food.
Robust robotic rodents for search and rescue
Applied to robotic devices, this same kind of active sensing approach greatly improves the accuracy and effectiveness of the sensors, enabling a robot to delicately feel its way around, rather than clumsily bumping into objects. In addition, while finger-like robotic probes can easily be damaged because the sensing components are directly exposed to the environment, with the Biotact technology the delicate electronic components are at the base of the whisker and do not come into direct contact with objects or surfaces. And artificial whiskers, just like their natural counterparts, continue to function even if they are broken or damaged, and they can be cheaply and easily replaced.
Several generations of sensors and robots developed by the Biotact team prove just how effective the approach can be. Shrewbot, the latest incarnation, looks a little like its namesake and can navigate its way around by touch alone.
'Shrewbot can even follow a moving object simply by using its whiskers. It has no visual sensors or any other type of sensing device,' Prof. Prescott says. 'Because the Biotact artificial whisker is modular, it can be used for a lot of different robots and devices, we've used it with a range of educational robots including the Lego Mindstorms robot, we have also produced a miniaturised version that uses a new kind of polymer-based actuator to move the whiskers.'
'We wanted to ensure that these sensors can be used as universally as possible, so you could go into a store and buy one much like you can buy a webcam today and mount it on any robot or any device,' Prof. Prescott adds. 'At the moment, the price of the technology is still relatively high, but we envisage that coming down over time and we've talked to some manufacturers -- there's definitely interest in this.'
Indeed, the range of applications for the technology is extensive. A Shrewbot-like robot could be used, for example, to help fire-fighters find people in burning buildings or other environments, where smoke, dust or darkness impede visual sensing. An aquatic version, which members of the Biotact team are looking to develop in a planned follow up project, could be used to inspect murky underwater environments.
'Instead of rats and shrews, it would be more like seals and walruses which also use their whiskers underwater,' the project coordinator says. 'Companies involved in nuclear decommissioning have expressed interest in this as they need devices that can inspect nuclear waste ponds, there are also potential applications in the oil-industry and in underwater archaeology.'
In medicine, vibrissal sensors could eventually, after further research, provide highly sensitive tactile feedback to doctors performing keyhole surgery, detecting different kinds of tissues or bone for example. In manufacturing, the sensing technology could be used to test product quality or sort products by analysing the texture of materials. And in vacuum cleaners, the system could automatically detect different surfaces and switch settings to ensure the most effective cleaning, depending on whether a floor is tiled or carpeted.
In a slightly different application of the sensing and actuator technology developed in Biotact, the University of Sheffield is currently working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to develop a helmet for fire fighters that combines ultrasound sensors for navigation in smoke-filled environments with actuators to provide tactile feedback to the wearer.
Biotact received research funding under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) as part of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) sub-programme. The results from Biotact illustrate how this type of long-term, foundational research can lead to research in other areas and use the techniques to solve problems elsewhere.

Germany arrests 4 for supplying Iran reactor parts
BERLIN (AP) ? German prosecutors say they have arrested one German man and three German-Iranian dual nationals on suspicion they supplied Iran with parts needed to build a nuclear reactor in violation of the country's trade embargo on such items.
Prosecutors' spokesman Marcus Koehler said suspects Rudolf M., a German, and dual citizens Kianzad Ka., Gholamali Ka. and Hamid Kh., were taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion they had illegally supplied valves needed for the reactor's construction in 2010 and 2011.
The three, whose last names were not released in accordance with German privacy laws, are accused of supplying the parts to Iran through front companies in Turkey and Azerbaijan in deals worth millions of euros.
Some 90 customs agents and prosecutors searched their homes and businesses in Hamburg, Oldenburg and Weimar.

I know many of you might be thinking that this is just a farm animal and we need to get a grip. Hey, I grew up on a farm and animals came and went, but even as a little girl the ?inside pang? was always there for any of the farm animals, pets or even our dad?s exotic birds. Losing our horse, Tony, was hard. Losing our collie was hard. Losing cows and calves were hard. Since then every single dog and cat have brought us immense sorrow and pain. They have been entwined in our lives and they have been loved as well as given us total love.
This story started about six years ago when we decided we wanted a donkey to protect our goats. At the auction I made a connection with two donkey sisters who looked into my eyes with that look ?please bring me home?. They did not look like they had been treated very well so of course they came home with us. We also brought a couple of other donkey?s with them. Amy and her sister Emy were so happy to have a good home and I know they they loved every single day at our place. Two years ago Emy left us and I thought my heart could never hurt like that. Two and half weeks ago when she gave birth we knew she not well and just hoped she would live long enough to wean her baby. She was so proud of her baby and she worked so hard to get the baby up so she could show him off to Cowboy. For 20 days she was the best loving mother you could ever imagine. On Saturday it simply shattered us to find her baby next to her lifeless body. The pain is unbearable and it will be a long time before we find normalcy again. You cannot underestimate the impact of an animal on your life.
Cowboy began bottle feeding Amy?s little baby boy. This story has so much drama. As most of you know I was in an accident here at farm on April 1st which resulted in a really bad ankle break. Today I finally am able to start intensive physical therapy and it was evident I could not be there for Amy?s baby as I am just now getting back on my feet. On Saturday the panic hit that?we needed to find someone that could bottle feed this precious fluff of fur. Fortunately for us we contacted a dear friend who lives on a ranch. Their three kids have raised show goats since they were little and they immediately said they would take him on. Cowboy delivered him yesterday with formula in hand. He has a lovely new place to grow and eat and is living with the new little show goats who are babies themselves. His main caregiver is one darling nine year old girl who is wise beyond her years. Within minutes she had bathed her new little donkey friend and had him on a halter! He is going to be so very lucky to have this new friend give him the care he needs. And living with the goats will be a good thing. When Cowboy found Amy and her baby right beside her our goats had grown close and were doing their best to protect the baby. They did not leave the baby donkey?s side all day. That alone made me cry.
We named Amy?s baby because we wanted his caregivers to have a name. His name is Andy and he is so very cute and we love him special because he was Amy?s special gift. As with any animals in this situation we know that something could happen and he might not make it, but our hearts are so full of gratitude of one little nine year old that is going to do her darnest to give?Andy?a chance?at life. She won our hearts years ago and is a very special little girl. Hope is a special gift and she does not know that she has given us the gift of hope.?What more could anyone need?
Yes, we got a big kick in the pants and we also know a little time will make things better, but we are not to that point yet, On the upside we have two other mama?s with two precious babies and we can give our energy and attention to them. We always tell our friends you have never been loved until you have goats and a donkey or two?

The anchor of Association Logic is the ?Non-Profit Mindset.? And what might that be? You ask. This is how a typical conversation might go once the ?Non-Profit Mindset? light is on:
Personality #1: Our members, the sailboat warriors of the kingdom of Oz, are increasingly replacing sailboats, with steamboats and airplanes. If we want to serve their changing needs, we should change our name and focus from ?serving the warriors who use sailboats,? to ?solving the warriors? transportation needs.?
Personality #2: Yes, but then we will not be true to our mission of promoting the sailboat industry. Instead, let?s just convince them that sailboats are better than steamboats or airplanes, okay?
Personality #1: We noticed that making our research available online hit a nerve. Members are flocking to our site and asking for more. Why not capitalize on this opportunity, add research from other data bases around the globe and create a subscription service that gives subscribers access to this entire data base?
Personality #2:? This is a great idea as long as we make sure never to charge for it. It is an important member benefit and they are already paying dues.
If you like Personality #2, you are in luck because it?s everywhere. It is the status quo!? It thrives on mutually exclusive and artificially sharp dichotomies?member vs. customer; non-profit vs. commerce; mission vs. business? that pit against each other things that often converge or are integrated in today?s fluid environment and its porous boundaries.
By looking at your environment through your constructed, association lens, rather than the other way around, logic and common sense go out of the window, eventually creating absurd premises for decision-making or economic strategy that benefit neither member nor provider organization. Welcome to Non-Profit mindset 101! Below are a few of?its mainstays.
- Revenue can only come from membership dues and the annual conference
- It stands to reason that if you need to boost your financial health, you need to recruit more members or increase your dues. Increasing value or re-configuring the way you do business is NOT good Association Logic.
- Should you come across groups or market segments who can benefit from your assets but do not fit your membership criteria or model, just drop them. You are not out to get ?customers? as if you were a vulgar business. You are just looking for ?members.?
- It is fine to increase dues arbitrarily, but not?to leverage your value into higher-end products and membership tiers that will increase both benefit to members and your revenue.? Anything of real value to members should be free of charge or discounted
- It is better to put all your efforts into recruiting more members at $195 each in annual fees than to charge ten, twenty, forty and more times as much for custom services and specialized subscriptions that they sorely need.
- It is far preferable to badger members with marketing and sales campaigns to persuade them of the value of your membership and your choice of products, than to really observe their behavior, understand their problems and co-develop with them the solutions they need.
- If you develop new sources for non-dues revenues, make sure they are as far from what?members define as real value as possible. For example, say yes to coming up with a random idea for a new certificate or global expansion because others are doing it. Say no to actually ferreting out members? interests or developing your own members to strategic buyers through cross-selling, customization, innovation and outcomes.
- If these make no sense financially or in terms of member outcomes, don?t worry. We are NOT a business and do not have to follow their logic. We use Association Logic, which is superior to business.
It is time to question our assumptions and exit association-centric logic. What is a non-profit after all?? Wikipedia defines it as: ?an organization that uses surplus revenues to achieve its goals rather than distributing them as profit or dividends.?? The difference is not in whether or not you make profit, but in how you dispense it.
Andrew Olsen in his blog ?Why Nonprofits Don?t Do Big Things? sees this mentality as the reason why most non-profits do not rise above mediocrity:
He lists some of the aphorisms of the Non-Profit mentality that enter our DNA through constant repetition:
- We only fund program, not operating costs, and certainly not fundraising costs.
- You?re paying your staff too much. Don?t you know this is a nonprofit?
- You?ve really got to spend more on?programs and less on infrastructure and capacity building ? donors don?t want?to fund that stuff.
?None of these is inherently bad,? Olsen notes. ?But it is incredibly naive to think that any organization (tax-exempt or not) can do real, lasting good on this planet without having the capacity to try new things, staff appropriately (and pay appropriately), take calculated risks that could lead to major breakthroughs, and have the financial reserves to withstand fluctuations in the economy.?? He believes that, unfortunately, actions like congressional hearings and ?watchdog rating mechanisms? increase risk aversion and discourage non-profits from building long-term, sustainable solutions to our most pressing problems.? ?He continues:
Can you imagine if the shareholders (i.e. donors) at Apple had told the board similar things about the way Steve Jobs ran the company? He made too much money. Cut his compensation. Spend less money on research and development ? can?t you find volunteers to help out with that stuff? Your marketing budget is way too big ? cut that in half. I?m sure we can find someone to give us those services as an in-kind contribution?We?d be without many of the products and technologies that right now are fueling economic growth around the globe. And thousands of people might be out of work because Apple was too focused on short-term goals?.Then why is the exact same approach to capacity building the accepted norm for the nonprofit sector??
