LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A 23-year-old beauty queen from Wisconsin won the Miss America pageant Saturday in Las Vegas after singing opera and strutting in a white bikini and black beaded evening gown.

Laura Kaeppeler also had to answer a question about whether beauty queens should declare their politics.

"Miss America represents everyone, so I think the message to political candidates is that they represent everyone as well," she said. "And so in these economic times, we need to be looking forward to what America needs, and I think Miss America needs to represent all."

Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson came in second, while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte placed third.

"I was crying even before my name was called," Kaeppeler said. "It was just surreal to have this honor."

Kaeppeler wins a $50,000 scholarship and gets the title for one year. Her platform during the competition was supporting and mentoring children of incarcerated parents ? a topic close to her heart.

Kaeppeler's father, Jeff Kaeppeler, told The Associated Press he served 18 months in federal prison for mail fraud.

He said when his daughter approached the family about making the personal topic her chosen platform, they supported it even though they knew it would be discussed publicly.

"We've seen this come full circle," he said.

Jeff Kaeppeler said his daughter's win on Saturday night was the best day of his life. He attended the event in a black tuxedo with a baby blue vest and bow tie.

"It taught us that God can turn anything into good if you let him," he said.

When asked about the experience during a news conference after the pageant, Laura Kaeppeler teared up and briefly brought her father onstage after calling him her best friend.

"I love you," Jeff Kaeppeler whispered to his daughter as dozens of cameras snapped pictures of them together.

Laura Kaeppeler's hometown of roughly 97,000 people, Kenosha, is about 40 miles south of Milwaukee.

She majored in music and vocal performance at a private Lutheran liberal arts college in Kenosha, and told pageant officials initially that she planned to obtain a master's degree in speech and language pathology and become a speech therapist.

But that's changed ? she now says she intends to use the scholarship money to pursue a law degree and become a family attorney, who specializes in helping children of incarcerated kids.

Kaeppeler was crowned the new Miss America by a panel of seven judges during a live telecast on ABC. The event was the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As the new Miss America, Kaeppeler will spend the next year touring the country to speak to different groups and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network, the Miss America Organization's official charity.

Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska won Miss America last year at age 17 to become the pageant's youngest winner ever. She said contestants' nerves likely were at their highest point just before the pageant.

"You can always breathe a sigh of relief" once the live pageant begins, Scanlan said.

Pageant officials earlier announced the winners of preliminary competitions, including Kaeppeler, Thompson and Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape for talent; and Monte, Miss Texas Kendall Morris and Miss Utah Danica Olsen for swimsuit.

Kaeppeler took home a $2,000 scholarship for her opera performance of "Il Bacio" in the talent competition.

Officials also said Miss Idaho Genevieve Nutting won the $2,000 Fourpoints Award, while Miss Kentucky Ann-Blair Thornton won the $6,000 Quality of Life scholarship.

The Miss America Organization touts itself as the world's largest giver of scholarships to women, with about $350,000 to be given this year at the national level.

Scanlan said she planned to use her scholarship to help pay for law school en route to a life in politics.

Romney says he may release tax returns in April (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? Under pressure, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he might be willing to release his tax returns.

But not until April, if then, and the multimillionaire former businessman is not getting much gratitude from his rivals for his grudging change of heart.

"If there's nothing there, why is he waiting till April?" former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told reporters.

Romney seemed hesitant when confronted about the tax returns in a Republican debate Monday night, first sidestepping calls from his rivals to release his records, then acknowledging later that he'd follow the lead of previous presidential candidates.

"I have nothing in them that suggests there's any problem and I'm happy to do so," he said. "I sort of feel like we're showing a lot of exposure at this point," he added.

Romney, the clear front-runner for the GOP nomination after back-to-back wins in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, was under fire from Gingrich and fellow GOP rivals Rick Perry, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum in Monday night's debate as they sought to knock him off stride.

The five will meet again in debate in Charleston Thursday night, the last time they will share a stage before Saturday's South Carolina primary.

The first Southern primary could prove decisive in the volatile contest. Gingrich has virtually conceded that a victory for Romney in South Carolina would assure his nomination as Democratic President Barack Obama's Republican rival in the fall, and none of the other remaining contenders has challenged that conclusion.

That only elevated the stakes for Monday night's debate. It was feisty from the outset, with the attacks on Romney often couched in anti-Obama rhetoric.

"We need to satisfy the country that whoever we nominate has a record that can stand up to Barack Obama in a very effective way," said Gingrich.

The five men on stage also sought to outdo one another in calling for lower taxes. Texas Rep. Ron Paul won that competition handily, saying he thought the top personal tax rate should be zero.

In South Carolina, a state with a heavy military presence, the tone turned muscular at times.

Gingrich drew strong applause when he said: "Andrew Jackson had a pretty clear idea about America's enemies. Kill them."

Perry also won favor from the crowd when he said the Obama administration had overreacted in its criticism of the Marines who were videotaped urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

Gingrich and Perry led the assault against Romney's record at Bain Capital, a private equity firm that bought companies and sought to remake them into more competitive enterprises, with uneven results.

"There was a pattern in some companies ... of leaving them with enormous debt and then within a year or two or three having them go broke," Gingrich said. "I think that's something he ought to answer."

Perry referred to a steel mill in Georgetown, S.C. where, he said, "Bain swept in, they picked that company over and a lot of people lost jobs there."

Romney said the steel industry was battered by unfair competition from China. As for other firms, he said, "Four of the companies that we invested in ... ended up today having some 120,000 jobs." And he acknowledged, "Some of the businesses we invested in were not successful and lost jobs."

It was Perry who challenged Romney to release his income tax returns. The Texas governor said he has already done so, and Gingrich has said he will do likewise later in the week.

"Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money. ... We cannot fire our nominee in September. We need to know now," Perry said.

Later, a debate moderator pressed Romney on releasing his tax returns. His response meandered.

"If that's been the tradition I'm not opposed to doing that," Romney said. "Time will tell. But I anticipate that most likely I'm going to get asked to do that in the April time period and I'll keep that open."

Prodded again, he said, "If I become our nominee ... what's happened in history is people have released them in about April of the coming year, and that's probably what I'd do."

April is long after the South Carolina primary and the Republican nomination could easily be all but decided by then, following Super Tuesday contests around the country in March.

Santorum stayed away from the clash over taxes, instead launching a dispute of his own. He said a campaign group supporting Romney has been attacking him for supporting voter rights for convicted felons, and asked Romney what his position was on the issue.

Romney initially ducked a direct answer, preferring to ask Santorum if the ad was accurate.

He then said he doesn't believe convicted violent felons should have the right to vote, even after serving their terms. Santorum instantly said that as governor of Massachusetts, Romney hadn't made any attempt to change a law that permitted convicted felons to vote while still on parole, a law the former Pennsylvania senator said was more liberal than the one he has been assailed for supporting.

Romney replied that as a Republican governor, he was confronted with a legislature that was heavily Democratic and held a different position.

He also reminded Santorum that candidates have no control over the campaign groups that have played a pivotal role in the race to date.

"It is inaccurate," Santorum said of the ad assailing him. "I would go out and say: `Stop it. That you're representing me and you're representing my campaign. Stop it.'"

That issue returned more than an hour later, when Gingrich said he too has faced false attacks from the same group that is criticizing Santorum. He noted that Romney says he lacks sway over the group, "which makes you wonder how much influence he would have if he were president."

Romney said he hoped no group would run inaccurate ads, and he said the organization backing Gingrich was airing a commercial that is so false that "it's probably the biggest hoax since Bigfoot."

He called for scuttling the current system of campaign finance laws to permit individuals to donate as much money as they want to the candidates of their choice.

Noting that the debate was occurring on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, one moderator asked Gingrich if his previous statements about poor children lacking a work ethic were "insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans."

"No," Gingrich said emphatically, adding his aim was to break dependence on government programs. "I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn to get a better job and learn someday to own the job," he said.

Romney is the leader in the public opinion polls in South Carolina, although his rivals hope the state's 9.9 percent unemployment rate and the presence of large numbers of socially conservative evangelical voters will allow one of them to slip by him.

Michelle Obama stresses service at BET honors (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage at an awards ceremony Saturday with poet Maya Angelou, performers Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey, and other African American celebrities who called the black community to civic action, starting with voting in the 2012 presidential election.

The taping of the BET Honors, hosted by Black Entertainment Television was held at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington.

It brought out stars including singers Patti LaBelle and queen of soul Aretha Franklin, as well as Washington political figures such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The politics-meets-glamour event fits in with the recently ramped up efforts by Obama to help her husband, President Barack Obama, win a challenging re-election bid in November.

Obama, in a crimson, one-shouldered gown, presented the Literary Arts award to Angelou and appealed to the crowd to follow Angelou's example as an activist.

"It is not enough merely to seek greatness for ourselves, we must help others discover greatness within themselves. We need to reach down and reach out, and give back and lift others," she said.

Speakers at the ceremony praised the Obamas for being the first black family in the White House and told the audience to "vote like your life depends on it."

"We have to exercise our constitutional right to vote. And there's a man out there with a vision for this country and he intends to finish what he started," said Beverly Kearney, head coach of the University of Texas' women's track team.

Those honored were filmmaker Spike Lee, World War Two Tuskegee airmen, as well as Angelou, Kearney, Wonder and Carey.

Obama stayed for the three-hour taping during which several acts had to be done over. While posing on stage with the award winners an audience member yelled, "We love you, First Lady!"

"Just her coming out and having a good time, it comes off like she's just like the rest of us. Since she connects, it's going to be helpful to her in helping Barack get another term," said Sonya Lowery, 41, of Maryland.

Zynga lures mobile gaming exec away from rival EA

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Online game maker Zynga Inc. has lured away an executive from rival Electronic Arts Inc.

The hiring of Barry Cottle, announced Thursday, underscores the escalating rivalry between rapidly growing Zynga and Electronic Arts, a video game stalwart.

Cottle, 50, had been overseeing Electronic Arts' push into mobile and online gaming for the past four years. The diversification beyond packaged video games has paid off. In a memo sent to Electronic Arts' employees Thursday, CEO John Riccitiello said the company's digital revenue surpassed $1 billion for the first time last year.

Zynga has emerged as a major competitor with series of hit games such as "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars," that have primarily been played on Facebook's social network.

In an effort to become less dependent on Facebook, Zynga is trying to expand its reach. It's counting on Cottle to help it realize those ambitions as its executive vice president of business and corporate development.

The company didn't disclose how much it's paying Cottle to leave Electronic Arts.

Zynga is flush right now, having just raised $1 billion in an initial public offering of stock completed last month. It's the most money raised by a U.S. Internet company since Google Inc. went public in 2004.

Investors so far aren't embracing Zynga like they did Google, whose stock price has never dipped below its IPO price of $85 per share. Zynga's shares, in contrast, still haven't closed above their IPO price of $10. The stock finished Thursday at $8.45, up 12 cents.

Cottle will report to Zynga's chief operating officer, John Schappert, and be based in the company's Los Angeles office. Zynga is headquartered in San Francisco.

Before joining Electronic Arts in 2007, Cottle worked at Palm Computing and the Walt Disney Co.

Ricky Gervais Talks Golden Globes With Ellen

The Golden Globes will air this Sunday, January 15th, and Ricky Gervais will once again take a turn as host of the ceremony. The British comedian is doing the obligatory press rounds ahead of the show, and spoke to Ellen DeGeneres to explain why he agreed to hosting duties for a third time. Ricky Gervais stopped by the ?Ellen? show (which will air Thursday, January 12) to dish on the Golden Globes with Ellen DeGeneres. (Check your local listings as to when the “Ellen” show airs in your area to see the full interview.) As Gervais had said previously, he wasn’t going to host the Globes again. Ellen asked what made him change his mind. ?The reason I said yes the first time was because I was very flattered. It was a huge global audience for a comedian. I like writing jokes. That?s what I do. The reason I did it the second time, was I thought I could improve on the first. Which, I think I did. ?I wasn?t going to do it again but there were loads of people in the press saying I?d never be invited back and that?s why I said yes.? While the Brit has [...]

Ormskirk News: Liverpool couple delighted to have first registrar wedding at St George?s Hall on Valentine?s Day weekend

THE first wedding at Liverpool?s St George?s Hall will be hosted on Valentine?s Day weekend, and Liverpool couple Hanifa Mitole and Chukwunenye NKeze couldn't be happier.

The ECHO exclusively revealed last year how the council?s birth, deaths and marriages service was set for a major move.

Leaving the Cotton Exchange on Old Hall Street to cross the city centre to St George?s Plateau the revamp has taken 15 months.

And the first wedding to take place at the impressive neo-classical building has now been pencilled in for February 11 in either The Grand Jury Room or smaller Sefton Room.

The lucky couple due to tie the knot are Hanifa Mitole, 31, and Chukwuneye NKeze, 36.

Originally from Zimbabwe and Nigeria respectively they jointly run a general store together in Anfield.

Meeting in 2007, when Chukwuneye came from London to Liverpool, Hanifa is on maternity leave with their first child.

The mum-of-one told the ECHO: ?We went to the Cotton Exchange to book and they told us about the move ? surprisingly we?re the first!

?I can?t get wait to get married in St George?s Hall, it?s beautiful.

?We?ll make sure we get pictures inside and out.?

Tracy Lowe, 35, and Stephen Coventry, 28, from Bootle are the second couple scheduled to tie the knot.

Support care worker Stephen said: ?I?m made up. It?s a really posh building. All the family can?t wait.

?We?ve got 70 people coming to the ceremony and 120 for the reception at the Head of Steam pub.

?We even booked St George?s Hall online.?
