Bosses see rosy year ahead in construction, health care, food ? The Straits Times (5 Apr 2012)

THERE is plenty of talk about gloomy times ahead but this year looks rosy for companies in sectors such as health care, food and construction, according to industry leaders yesterday.

They were full of optimism at a discussion to launch this year?s Enterprise 50 (E50) awards.

?2012 is supposed to be turbulent but for us, it?s a year of growth and expansion,? said Dr Rosemary Tan, chief executive of molecular diagnostics kit maker Veredus Laboratories.

?Health care is an area that people put emphasis on regardless of whether times are good or bad,? she said.

Innovation key to SMEs? productivity ? The Straits Times (5 Apr 2012)

SMALLER companies do not always need to be high-tech to raise productivity and cut costs ? changing the way the business is carried out will do just as well.

That was the message yesterday from Mr Victor Tay, chief operating officer of the Singapore Business Federation (SBF).

He cited a ramen shop he visited in Tokyo that was a one-man operation; only the chef. Customers paid by dropping their money into a box, picked up a voucher to give the chef, collected their food and cleared their bowls after eating.

?In Singapore, there would be a cashier and a server, which adds cost to the business,? noted Mr Tay, who was speaking at a lunch forum on the Future of Technology and its Impact on Innovation and Productivity at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Licensees will have to ensure that the equipment packaging contains information for consumers about where to locate the electronic compliance label for verification.

Why so few S?poreans in services sector? ? The Business Times (3 Apr 2012)

The government?s drive to cap the hiring of foreign workers will nudge businesses towards higher productivity if Singaporeans change their mindset about the services sector, said a panel of experts yesterday.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), the panellists said that though the Singapore economy was moving up the value chain towards higher-value offerings, services sector firms tended to lag in terms of productivity.

Until Singaporeans start to take up service jobs, the panellists said local participation in the sector was unlikely to change much.

Going beyond borders for cash-strapped start-ups ? The Business Times (3 Apr 2012)

CASH-STRAPPED start-ups now have the opportunity to scale beyond their borders once online networking website Startup Habitat comes full swing.

The brains behind this novel concept, Ms Cheng and Ms Yang, who requested to be identified only by their surnames, saw the missing link prohibiting start-ups from scaling overseas.

?We discovered that start-ups need to scale. And one of the most difficult things about scaling is finding the right partners for scaling,? said Ms Cheng.

She posed the following: ?Singapore is one of the best places in terms of funding and in terms of finding a start-up. But is it easy to find a successful one? One with superb growth??
