Microsoft and AOL have announced a deal that will see Microsoft purchase over 800 patents that AOL currently holds. In addition of buying outright 800 patents, Microsoft is also licensing 300 more patents. AOL gets to keep a license allowing it to use all the patents covered in the deal. The patents cover a number of things such as advertising, search, and content generation among others.

The deal is worth $1.056 billion and is expected to close by the end of year. ?The agreement with Microsoft represents the culmination of a robust auction process for our patent portfolio,? said Tim Armstrong, AOL?s Chairman and CEO. ?We continue to hold a valuable patent portfolio as highlighted by the license we entered into with Microsoft. Although a computer/hard drive can be replaced in case of an accident, the data may not be so fortunate. Businesses heavily rely on their data to function. This could be emails, list of clients, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases. The same goes for the home user. Not everyone has a backup, not all backups are safe.

In case of hard drive failure, many residents and business leaders of Los Angeles turn to the city?s Data Recovery firms. Data recovery is the process of salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted, or inaccessible secondary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. The most common data recovery scenario involves an operating system (OS) failure, in which case the goal is simply to copy all wanted files to another disk. Furthermore, end users generally do not have the hardware or technical expertise required to make these repairs. Consequently, data recovery companies are often employed to salvage important data.

The sophisticated procedures used by data recovery companies in physical recovery include removing a damaged PCB (printed circuit board) and replacing it with a matching PCB from a healthy drive, performing a live PCB swap, read/write head assembly with matching parts from a healthy drive, and removing the hard disk platters from the original damaged drive and installing them into a healthy drive. Indeed, such firms often use a combination of all of these procedures in physical recovery.

THERE is plenty of talk about gloomy times ahead but this year looks rosy for companies in sectors such as health care, food and construction, according to industry leaders yesterday.

They were full of optimism at a discussion to launch this year?s Enterprise 50 (E50) awards.

?2012 is supposed to be turbulent but for us, it?s a year of growth and expansion,? said Dr Rosemary Tan, chief executive of molecular diagnostics kit maker Veredus Laboratories.

?Health care is an area that people put emphasis on regardless of whether times are good or bad,? she said.

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has revised its regulations in its continuous effort to streamline its licensing and equipment registration processes, and reduce business cost for telecommunication service providers and equipment dealers.

The use of electronic compliance labels on registered telecommunication equipment will be allowed with immediate effect. From today, telecommunication equipment dealers licensed by IDA, such as suppliers or manufacturers, are permitted to display the compliance label on the equipment?s built-in display screen or in the softcopy of the equipment?s instruction manual, as an alternative to traditional sticker labels. Licensees will have to ensure that the equipment packaging contains information for consumers about where to locate the electronic compliance label for verification.

The government?s drive to cap the hiring of foreign workers will nudge businesses towards higher productivity if Singaporeans change their mindset about the services sector, said a panel of experts yesterday.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), the panellists said that though the Singapore economy was moving up the value chain towards higher-value offerings, services sector firms tended to lag in terms of productivity.

Until Singaporeans start to take up service jobs, the panellists said local participation in the sector was unlikely to change much.

Trade Associations and Chambers (TACs) are stepping up efforts to support upgrading at the sectoral level and beyond.?Nine TACs are undertaking??industry-upgrading projects aimed at raising productivity, capability development and helping Singapore enterprises become globally competitive.
