Cabo San Lucas is no longer the destination for American retirees. Nor is it the celebrity hang out it once was, back in the 1980's and 90's. No, today Cabo is for families and couples. The starlets lounging on the beaches are soccer moms, and their entourage usually includes a couple of children with a partner in tow. Of course, those newlyweds and lovey-dovey couples are down the other end of the beach, where clothing is optional and sunscreen has been traded in for tanning oil. Alright, so perhaps its not quite like that, but you get the idea!
Beach Safety
Close to Marina Town is Medano Beach, which is widely considered the safest beach in Cabo San Lucas. Playa del Amore is also named as one of the safer beaches. However, be aware unlike most Yucatan beaches there is no flag system signalling the safety status of the water, nor are there lifeguards. Riptides are common, so take great care when swimming. If you find yourself caught up in a rip current, the safest thing to do is not panic and allow yourself to float along with the current. The natural flow of a rip current is in the shape of a horseshoe, so by floating along with the current you will end up back at the shoreline. DO NOT swim against the current, as you will only tire yourself out and risk drowning.
Visitor Information
Aside from retirees, there is one other thing Cabo San Lucas is notorious for: timeshare real estate. Even today, that stereotype has not faded away. However, timeshare sales tactics are getting more crafty. Should you come across a kiosk or stall entitled "visitor information", be aware the people inside will certainly offer you information, but it will be tangled up in a sales pitch for Cabo timeshares. If you truly need information, head to a gas station, bank, post office or hotel for directions.
Currency Exchange
There are many currency exchange outlets all over Cabo San Lucas, but their exchange rate will not be very competitive. Instead, try to head to the banks for exchanging money. It may be slightly less convenient, but at least you will save a bit of cash.
Health
First of all, remember Cabo San Lucas has a long history of catering to American retirees. That history has had an impact on the hospitals. Mexico hospitals in general are very good, and definitely comparable to those in the US and Canada. In Cabo San Lucas, however, Amerimed is the clinic to use should a problem arise. The doctors are bilingual, the clinic adheres to American standards, and they accept credit cards for payment.
